Why add this Silver Madonna and Child Hungarian Denar in Story Vault Holder to your collection?
The silver Denar with the Madonna and Child motif, known as "Maddonnenmunzen," was introduced during the reign of King Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490), replacing the previous "shield coin" design, and continued to be struck in Hungary until the early 17th century. The coin was the first of Hungarian coinage to portray such imagery, and among the first coinage of the period to include a full date. The coins were hand struck by Magyar craftsmen, with a weight of 0.5-0.6g and a diameter of 15-16mm.
Classic image of Madonna and Child
The focal point of the obverse is the gorgeous image of the Madonna holding the child Jesus in her arms, the Kremnica Mint mark "K" and "B" in the field areas beside her. "PATRONA VNGARIE" (the Patron Saint of Hungary) borders the image.
A shield divided into four parts, representing the Hungarian Royal Coat of Arms adorns the reverse, surrounded by the ruling monarch's name and title, and the date, if the coin was struck before 1570.
