Description

Why buy this Italy 1139-1339 Genoa Republic Silver Denaro?

The Italy Silver 1139-1339 Genoa Republic Denaro was minted to pay soldiers on their way to fight in the Crusades, making this a great piece for anyone with a passion for medieval and/or Christian history. Genoa was a major maritime power of the time, and this coin could have been used in any or several of a number of modern day countries, such as Ukraine, Tunisia, France, and Russia. Because of the coin’s use as payment for soldiers going to fight for the Holy Land, this piece is known as a Crusader coin.

Simple stylized Castle design

At the center of the obverse is a Jerusalem cross, which is appropriate given where the Crusaders were fighting. Around the cross is a circular frame, outside of which is the inscription “CVNRADI REX,” for Conrad III of Germany, who was a leader in the Second Crusade.

A stylized castle is featured at the center of the reverse. The inscription “IANVA,” i.e. “Genoa,” is inscribed outside the circular frame around the castle.

Well preserved Extremely Fine 40

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this coin is in Extremely Fine 40 condition. That means that there is minor wear on a majority of the high points, but the details are complete. You’ll receive your coin inside of a special story vault holder!
