The Classic Design of the Gold American Eagle
A classic design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for $20 Gold Double Eagle coins, which were issued from 1907-1933, was selected for the obverse of the Gold American Eagle coins. The image is a depiction of Lady Liberty with flowing hair in mid-stride walking towards the viewer. She holds an olive branch in her left hand and a lit torch in her right hand. In the distant background you see the U.S. Capitol Building along with rays of sunshine reaching skyward over the horizon. The entire image is encircled completely with a ring of stars. Inscribed on the obverse is “LIBERTY” and the year of the coin's release. Upon their initial release Gold American Eagles displayed the year in Roman numerals. In 1992 the U.S. Mint switched to displaying the year in Arabic numerals.
The reverse of the coin features a design created by sculptor Miley Busiek and depicts a male bald eagle holding an olive branch while coming in for a landing on its nest, where a female eagle and her hatchlings eagerly await. Inscriptions on the reverse of your Gold Eagle coin are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “½ OZ. FINE GOLD ~ 25 DOLLARS”.
