Gold Maple Leaf coins are the best-selling bullion coin in the world and are produced annually by the Royal Canadian Mint. The gold version of this annual release began in 1979, a time when inflation was reaching double digits and the only other gold bullion coin was the Krugerrand. The Gold Maple Leaf quickly became popular and the top of its competition. Due to its rising popularity, Canada began to issue special versions and finishes of this coin for collectors.
Design of the 1 oz. Gold Maple Leaf Bullion Coin
The design of the 1 oz. Gold Maple Leaf features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse. The effigy was designed by Susanna Blunt and is unique to coins minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. Although the Queen appears on other coins, this depiction is the one that appears only on coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. The inscriptions on the obverse of this coin reads:, "ELIZABETH II 50 DOLLARS," along with the issuing year of the coin.
The reverse, or design side, of these coins features the symbolic Canadian Maple Leaf. The Maple Leaf appears on each year's issue along with the inscriptions: "CANADA 9999 FINE GOLD 1 oz. OR PUR 9999."
