Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria was the longest reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, a reign that lasted 63 years and 7 months. She was well liked by the public - the period of her reign was known as the 'Victorian era,' a name that is still in common use today by British and Americans alike. She was known as "the grandmother of Europe," as her nine children married into nobility across the continent.

Queen Victoria era sovereigns

Sovereigns minted between 1837 and 1901 came in four distinct 'types' as described below. This item is for the last of the four types:

  • 1838-1874: Shield type - The first type of Victorian sovereign used a youthful Victoria design with her hair tied in a bun and ribbons around her head. This design was created by William Wyon. The reverse design, by Jean Baptiste Merlen, is a crowned shield.
  • 1871-1885: Young Head type - The obverse remains basically unchanged from the previous design except that her entire abbreviated title crowds the rim. The reverse design makes a return of the St. George and Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci which had not been used since 1825.
  • 1887-1891: Jubilee Head type - Now widowed, this obverse design shows a decidedly older Queen Victoria wearing a small crown. It was designed to celebrate her golden jubilee. The reverse of the coin remained the same, with St. George slaying a dragon.
  • 1893-1901: Old Head type - This was the final design used during Queen Victoria's reign. It depicts an old queen with a veil over her crown. The reverse design remained the same, with St. George slaying a dragon.

Why Gold Sovereigns?

Besides being one of the longest running series of coins in the world (minted since 1489), British Sovereigns are a standard of gold buyers worldwide, and their design remains standard today (other than the obvious change in monarchy). They are simple yet elegant, and make a wonderful way to own gold!
