The Morgan Silver Dollar
The Morgan Silver Dollar coin is by far one of the most collected coins ever minted by the United States of America. The incredible appeal of this coin is determined by several key factors, the most important of which is the absolute beauty of this All-American silver dollar. Collectors and stackers alike are also drawn to this beautiful coin due to the many varieties it has to offer, the ability to collect this series in higher investment quality grades, the chase for the rare Carson City minted coins of the old west, and the fact that you can truly enjoy collecting the Morgan Dollar series in so many different ways.
The iconic design was developed by the Assistant Engraver to the United States Mint, Mr. George T. Morgan during the fall of 1877, and the first coins began rolling hot off the press in March of 1878. George Morgan would use the likeness of Anna Willess Williams as his model to formulate a distinctly American depiction of Lady Liberty. The Morgan Silver dollar boasts an immensely beautiful engraving of Lady Liberty on the obverse of the coin that has been captivating collectors since its very inception. On the front of the coin you will find the portrait of Lady Liberty as she faces left in profile, wearing a Phrygian style cap decorated with a headband bearing the inscription ‘LIBERTY’, and a few accent leaves protruding from directly behind the band. Thirteen stars representing the original 13 colonies encircle the lower bust portion of Lady Liberty, while the motto ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ complete the obverse design encircling the upper portion of the coin. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar carries a brilliant image of an American eagle with wings outstretched clutching a branch and three arrows in its talons, with a small wreath below both wings joining just under the tail feathers. Each coin is minted using the standard 90% silver composition with a diameter of 38.1 millimeters and weighing in at 26.73 grams. The total silver weight associated with each Morgan Silver Dollar is typically a little more than three-quarters of a troy oz., or .77344 oz. of pure silver.
