Design of the 20 Francs French Gold Angel
The coin’s obverse features Dupre’s exquisite angel design. Dupre, who was obsessed with guardian angels, crafted a design with an angel on a pedestal who is inscribing a document, generally accepted to be the French Constitution. The popular interpretation of Dupré’s design, is that he was suggesting a divinely inspired democracy for France. The inscription reads “Republique Francaise” with Dupre’s signature at the bottom center of the coin.
The coin’s reverse features an inscription of the denomination and date within a wreath. The inscription is the national motto of France “LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE” which is French for “liberty, equality, fraternity.” It is written around the rim of the coin.
Angel coins were issued in France as early as 1340 and in England in 1465. Long thought to be good luck, angel coins have a long history. Angel coins are rumored to have been carried as talismans by Napoleon Bonaparte; World War I fighter pilots from France, Britain, and the United States; and 20th century military pilots flying during conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, and Kuwait. The myth still persists today with many carrying an “angel in their pocket” as symbols of luck and protection.
