Born in 1819 to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn and German born Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, inherited the throne at the age of 18, and reigned over the United Kingdom for 63 years and 7 months until her death in 1901.
She was a revered public figure - the period of her reign was known as the 'Victorian era,' a name that is still in common use today by British and Americans alike. She was known as "the grandmother of Europe," as her nine children married into nobility across the continent.
