Why does a random date 1854-1889 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin deserve a place in your collection?
The only three dollar denomination gold coin series ever to be issued by the U.S. Mint was produced from 1854 until 1889, featuring a personification of liberty as an Indian Princess created by fourth U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre. A nearly identical design was minted on the one dollar gold coin during the same time period. The Indian Princess Three Dollar gold bullion coin measures 20.5 mm in diameter, struck from 0.1451 troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
Portrait of an Indian Princess
Lady Liberty is depicted as an Indian Princess facing left on the obverse, with long wavy hair. A spectacular feather crown rests upon her head, with "LIBERTY" boldly inscribed across the headband. The inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" frames the image.
The reverse features a ribbon-tied wreath crafted from important mid-19th century American crops: tobacco, wheat, corn and cotton. Within the wreath, "3 DOLLARS" and the year of issue are inscribed.
