Benedictions and good fortune in the design
The obverse of the coin features the image of and open hand. This is the right Hand of God as if held up in prayer. It was not typical in the Middle Ages for a body part of God to be depicted in art or coinage without inclusion of an entire body. Typical depictions of God were of an entire person. This disassociated hand was originally thought to be irreverent. Over time, when coupled with the reverse design that features the Cross, the coin became a tangible sign of Divine blessings and luck.
