Popularity of the Krugerrand
This South African gold coin gained immense worldwide popularity shortly after their debut in 1967. Due to economic and import sanctions imposed by the United States in 1986, Krugerrands became illegal to import into the United States, and quickly fell out of favor with American collectors. That ended in 1991 with the lifting of the sanctions, and once again the Krugerrand became one of the most popular gold bullion coins among Americans.
Worldwide, by 1980 the Krugerrand captured the bulk of the world gold coin market. Between the years 1974 and 1985 an estimated 22 million Krugerrands were imported into the United States alone prior to the passing of the aforementioned sanctions, which were later lifted.
