Queen’s Beast White Horse of Hanover Silver Proof

One of the most popular and sought-after series in recent memory is the British Royal Mint’s queen’s beast series. The coins use as their subject matter a set of ten statues that sculptor James Woodford created in 1953 for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. The Royal Houses that comprise the Queen’s ancestors are all represented by the statues and their appearance on the coins in the series.

The first release in the series was the Lion of England, followed by the Unicorn of Scotland, the Red Griffin of Wales, the Black Bull of Clarence, the Falcon of the Plantagenets, the Yale of Beaufort and finally the White Horse of Hanover. The Royal Mint strikes the series in a variety of sizes and in bullion and proof finishes in silver, gold and platinum. Two releases remain in this iconic series that will conclude next year.

White Horse of Hanover Coin Design

White Horse of Hanover Coin Design

The reverse design of the coin features the White Horse of Hanover rampant over a Coat of Arms. The White Horse of Hanover represents George of Hanover, who upon his ascension to the throne became King George the First. The Coat of Arms depicted is King George’s. It is divided four times. One quarter represents Great Britain, one France, one Ireland and the fourth Hanover.

The obverse design of the coin uses the definitive “Fifth Portrait” of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The images used for the entire series have been designed the British Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark.
