The Platinum Proof Eagle Series started in 1988. Unlike its bullion counterpart, the series has consisted of several series within a series. In 2018, the series broke new ground when for the first time ever it featured new obverse designs created concurrently by the same designer, along with a new reverse design. The 2020 edition of the coin marks the last of three issues in the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Platinum Proof Coin Series.
The series features designs that celebrate Life, Liberty, and Happiness, references to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” the three rights specifically mentioned in the Declaration’s preamble. This issue represents the last of them, the pursuit of happiness. The West Point Mint’s “W” mint mark is on the right side of the reverse. The coin is perfect for collectors with an interest in American history and an appreciation of American values.
Justin Kunz’s obverse design was sculpted by Michael Gaudioso. Liberty and a young girl harvest the fruits of their labor. Liberty holds an overflowing cornucopia, which represents the intellectual, physical, and spiritual rewards that are only possible when people are free. A house and silo stand in the distance, combining with an orchard to represent the hopes and values of Americans. “Happiness” is inscribed prominently in script as it appears on the Declaration of Independence next to Liberty. Her name, “LIBERTY,” is at the bottom, and the date, “2020,” is on the left. The two statutory mottoes, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” are inscribed along the rim.
The reverse design was created by Patricia Lucas-Morris and sculpted by Don Everhart. Common to all three issues in the short series, it is a closeup look at an eagle spreading its wings while holding an olive branch in its talons. The olive branch represents peace. The coin’s face value, “$100,” is inscribed above the bird’s head, while its weight, “1 OZ.,” and purity, “.9995 PLATINUM,” are inscribed below. The name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” spreads throughout the top half of the rim.
