Pontus was a region of ancient Greece located on the southern coast of the Black Sea, currently the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. The ancient city of Gaziura was positioned on the Iris River; the residence of the kings of Pontus situated within its borders. Struck 100-85 B.C., this coin of Gaziura is identified as an AE28 - a 28 mm diameter bronze coin.
A famous collector from Ottoman history once owned this coin in his private collection. Prince Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha of Samos grew interested in ancient Greek and Roman coins by his travels abroad and by the end of his life he had grown quite a substantial group of coins! Symbolic imagery derived from Greek mythology
The obverse features the laureate portrait of the Greek god of the sky and thunder Zeus, facing right. An eagle is illustrated on the reverse, depicted with its wings spread open, perched upon a thunderbolt facing left, with its head turned back over its shoulder. Greek inscription below. The eagle and the thunderbolt are two of the identifying symbols of Zeus.
Ancient Bronze Coin authenticated and graded by NGC
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC) specialized ancient coin division graded this bronze coin struck 100-85 B.C. in the ancient Greek Pontus town of Gaziura to be Fine (F). The coin will exhibit some lettering and design detail in deeply recessed areas. The coin is well worn from circulation, with mostly even wear over the entirety of its surface. The condition of the coin is protected in a labeled NGC holder that authenticates the coin's pedigree from the numismatic collection of Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha, Prince of the Greek Island of Samos (1885-1894).
