This is the 100th year issue of the Silver Shekel of Tyre! The ancient Phoenician City of Tyre, located in current day Lebanon, was the only city in the region which consistently minted superior quality, high purity silver coins in large quantities and denominations used for commerce. This Silver Shekel was minted in 27/6 B.C. and is a Choice Very Fine example of the coin. It has remarkably clear imagery, sharp depictions of the Mint mark of Tyre, a club, and alpha-numeric symbol of the date above on the reverse.
The shekel of Tyre is well known, thanks to numerous mentions in the Bible. Famous numismatic author and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee member, Kenneth Bressett, discusses this renowned coin in his book, Money of the Bible.
City of Tyre symbolism
The laureate bust of the Phoenician god Melkart adorns the obverse. Equivalent to the Greek god Heracles, Melkart is the patron deity of the city of Tyre. The reverse features the prow of a ship with an eagle standing proudly with a branch of palm behind, representing ancient Tyre as an influential commercial port city.
