Mysia was a region in the northwest of ancient Asia Minor (Anatolia, Asian part of modern Turkey). It was home to the Mysian, Phrygian, and Aeolian Greek civilizations during ancient times. This AE10 (bronze, 10 mm diameter), was struck on the Mysian Island of Nesos, sometime during the 3rd-2nd Centuries BC.

Impressive imagery

The obverse features the right facing laureate head of Apollo, one of the most important of the gods of Olympus.

Depicted on the reverse is a panther, crouching to the right, with its head looking back. In Greek mythology, the black panther symbolized the unleashing of suppressed urges, of breaking through barriers and inhibitions, and was the favored animal of the Greek god Dionysus, the god of the vine, winemaking, and wine.

This Mysian Island of Nesos issued Bronze coin struck in 3rd-2nd Centuries B.C. earned the grade of Very Fine (VF) from the ancient coin grading experts of the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Having surface and strike characteristics similar to a coin graded 20-25 on the Sheldon Scale, this coin will exhibit nearly complete image details. The coin is enclosed in a NGC labeled protective holder, certifying its origins from the recently auctioned 630 piece collection of the late Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha, Prince of Samos from 1885-1894.
