Indo-Scythians Silver Tetradrachm of Azes I/II - After 58 BC NGC VF
This Indo-Scythians Azes Silver Tetradrachm is in excellent condition for its age, having earned the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation’s (NGC’s) grade of Very Fine (VF), which would, for comparison’s sake, fall somewhere between 20-25 on the Sheldon Scale. The coin is of interest for several reasons, not the least of which is its age and the region from which it comes. The Indo-Scythians lived in parts of modern day Afghanistan, India, Iran, and Pakistan. It may be of special interest to Christians and others who take an interest in the Bible because it is thought that Caspar, one of the Magi, was sent to visit Jesus by Azes II of Bactrai. If scholars are correct on this point, it is possible that this Tetradrachm helped to fund that journey. The image on the reverse of the coin is reflective of the influence of Greece in the culture, as features the goddess Athena along with a shield and spear. On the obverse is the king, Azes II, on horseback. Whether it is the age or the Biblical connection that appeals to you, this coin is sure to occupy a special place in your collection.
