This $50 note is a stunning result of the detail and artwork that was put into notes, even at such an early time in American history. In the center of the obverse of this note is a familiar design - George Washington! This is actually the same image we see on our current $1 bill, except the design on this $50 note is much more detailed. On either side of this portrait are vignettes referring to the agriculture of the State. On the right is an image of a farm hand hauling a basket of produce through the fields, with others seen working in the background. On the left is an image of a wagon full of cotton bales being pulled by 2 horses who seem to be struggling under its weight. All of these designs are extraordinarily intricate, and are a testament to the skill used to create the designs printed on this scrip. Compared to a current note, you can see that this 1872 issue was produced with a much more detailed design!
Produced in the late 19th century, these notes were created as bonds to finance the reconstruction of the Blue Ridge Railway. E. B. Wesley, a founder of the New York times, agreed to give the State of South Carolina $300,000 in order to back these notes. In return, the State of South Carolina gave him $1,000,000 worth of the scrip. A year Later, the State repealed the act, making these notes worthless! After failing to sue for the return of his Money, Wesley put these notes into storage where they have been for over a century! Don’t miss the exciting chance to purchase this note, graded Superb Gem Uncirculated 69! This is an extraordinary grade, and it is not something to miss. If you are interested, hurry to purchase this item - the note is in excellent condition for its age, and is sure to attract the attention of many collectors!
