Why Purchase this 1872 $50 South Carolina Note Graded Superb Gem Uncirculated 68 EPQ by PMG?
This stunning $50 Bond has quite a bit of history behind it! It was originally created by the government of the State of South Carolina in 1872 in order to fund the reconstruction of the Blue Ridge Railway. They needed an underwriter for the scrip however, and that would be E. B. Wesley, founder of the New York Times! He sent them $300,000, and they compensated him with $1,000,000 worth of the scrip; a very large amount of money, especially back in those days! Unfortunately for Wesley, a year later the act enabling these notes was repealed, and the scrip he received became worthless. After his death, he passed ownership of the notes to his children, but they remained in storage until recent years. When we received these $50 notes, we quickly sent them to Paper Money Guaranty (PMG), NGC’s Paper Currency grading side, to be graded. They determined them to be a grade of Superb Gem Uncirculated 68 - a very high grade for a note printed so long ago! These notes have remained in excellent condition over their years of storage, and are now in prime condition and ready to be a part of your collection!
Because this note is still in such fine condition, its design is clearly seen. In fact, it is probably sharper than any note you could pull from your wallet! Right in the center of the obverse is a rather familiar image of George Washington. It would appear familiar, because it is the same design currently on our $1 bill! The version on this 1872 note contains much more detail however, and the design is actually slightly larger. On either side of this image are intricate vignettes that display South Carolina’s reliance on its agriculture. On the right we see an image of a farmhand carrying a large basket overflowing with produce through a field. Other workers can be seen behind him, gathering. On the left is an image of 2 horses pulling hard on a wagon piled high with bales of cotton. This vignettes are tremendously detailed, and they go to show the skill and artistry that was put towards the production of these notes at that time.
You don’t want to miss your chance at owning this $50 South Carolina note. It is in very good condition for its age, and will be a definite eyecatcher in your collection of paper currency! If you are interested in purchasing this note, than don’t wait - others will be too!
