Powerful Kangaroo Design by Dr. Stuart Devlin
Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which appeared on Australian coinage for over two decades, has been replaced with a portrait of the monarch by British Royal Mint designer Jody Clark. Clark shows the monarch down to her shoulders with her head turned to face the right side of the coin. She wears the same crown that she wore at her coronation, the Royal Diamond Diadem. The portrait is encircled by a rim frame on which there are three inscriptions, "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," and "1 DOLLAR."
Dr. Stuart Devlin's red kangaroo design is on the reverse. Devlin shows the animal, long a symbol of the island nation, bounding with its feet extended downward. The radiating design in the background symbolizes Australia's hot sun. An ornate rim frame encircles the image. Within the frame are two sets of inscriptions, one at the top, "AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO," and one at the bottom, "2019 1 OZ 9999 SILVER."
