The silver Washington quarter was minted from the years 1932 until 1964 at the main mint facility in Philadelphia, as well as two major branch mints; one in Denver, and the other in San Francisco. Design of the Silver Washington QuarterThe obverse of the coin was inspired by the famous Jean Antoine Houdon bust of George Washington located at the Virginia State Capital in Richmond, Virginia. John Flanagan was the sculptor from New York who adapted the original design in order to be able to mint the coin that was intended to commemorate the 200th Birthday of the First President of the United States of America. The main design element on the reverse of the coin is an American Bald eagle with wings unfolding, clutching a quiver of arrows, situated above an oak branch. The diameter of each coin is a sizable 24.3 mm with a weight of 6.25 grams and composed of .900 silver and .100 copper. Each coin has a total weight of approximately .18084 Troy oz., or just slightly above 7 Troy oz. of pure silver in a full roll of 40 coins. There are three different places where a discussion of presidents and U.S. coinage could start: with George Washington and Lady Liberty, with Thomas Jefferson and William McKinley, or with Abraham Lincoln. As we will see, a lot depends on what “circulating” means and what a “commemorative” is, and deciding what actually counts!
