$100 Face Bag of 200 40% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars
This bag of 40% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars contains coins dated from 1965-1969. The coins bear the same image as the version from 1964, but they do not share the same silver content. That makes this bag of coins much more affordable for those who are more concerned with the numismatic aspects of the coins as opposed to their intrinsic value.
Design of these 40% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars
On the obverse of these 40% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars, President John F. Kennedy faces to the left side of the coin. His hair is parted on the left and is cut short. The initials of the designer, “GR” (Gilroy Roberts), are inscribed on the base of his neck. “LIBERTY” arches over the effigy from left to right, with some letters partially obscured by Kennedy’s hair. The first two words of the national motto, “IN GOD,” are inscribed to the left of the President’s neck while the last two, “WE TRUST,” appear to its right in the space created by the diagonal truncation of the neck. The mintage year for each coin is inscribed at the bottom.
The image on the reverse was adapted from the presidential seal by Frank Gasparro. In the center is a shield around which an eagle spreads its wings and talons. The talon on the left holds an olive branch while the one on the right holds arrows. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon that stretches out over its head. The ribbon reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Thirteen stars arch over the bird’s head. As with the number of stripes on the shield, this pays tribute to the original thirteen states. Fifty stars representing the fifty states form a circular frame around the image. Outside of that frame are two inscriptions along the rim, “HALF DOLLAR,” the coin’s face value, at the bottom, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the country of issue, at the top.
