He played from 1923 until his forced retirement in 1939, the year of this set. before he retired, Gehrig made one of the most memorable speeches in sports history that was heartfelt and poignant. It was during this speech he uttered the famous line honored on this set, “for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Over the course of his career he played 2,130 consecutive baseball games. He was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a deadly disease that has since become also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
