Why add this 1776 France 1 oz Silver Proof Libertas Americana Medal to your collection?
Benjamin Franklin commissioned the Libertas Americana (Freedom for America) following colonial victories in Yorktown and Saratoga. An estimated 200 bronze, 50 silver, and exactly two gold pieces were struck. The gold pieces were struck for Queen Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, while the silver medals were given to military officials in America and European heads of state. Now, collectors have the chance to own commemorative medals with these classic designs. Part of a mintage of just 5,000 pieces, this medal was struck at Monnaie de Paris from 1 oz of .950 fine silver. It will arrive in GEM Proof condition.
Exquisite Liberty Design by Esprit-Antoine Gibelin
French artistic Esprit-Antoine Gibelin designed and Augustin Dupre sculpted the designs. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. She has long, flowing hair. At the back of her head is a pole upon which sits a liberty cap. The words "LIBERTAS AMERICANA" arch over the image, while the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, "4 JUIL 1776," is inscribed at the bottom.
On the reverse an infant strangles a pair of serpents. This represents American victories over the British at Yorktown and Saratoga. The image also includes Minerva, who holds a lion at bay with a spear and a shield. This part is symbol of the French assistance. "NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFAS" is inscribed along the rim. That translates to "The infant is not bold without divine aid." At the bottom are inscriptions of the dates of the American victories at Saratoga ("17 OCT 1777") and Yorktown ("19 OCT 1781).
