Tetrobol from Histiaea on the Island of Euboea

This silver Tetrobol was struck in the ancient city of Histiaea on the Island of Euboea. Minted during the 3rd through 2nd centuries BC, the Tetrobol weighs roughly 2.5 grams. Some historians have speculated that Euboea may have been where the Greek alphabet was first used, and where Homer may have spent part of his life. Regardless, the commercial influence of the island is well documented. As is typical of many ancient Greek cities, there was a god, goddess, or nymph named as the cities “patron saint”. The city of Histiaea was located on the second largest Greek island, where the mythical Naiads inhabited the rivers, lakes, and springs. Being immortal, the Naiads were invited to attend assemblies of the Gods on Mount Olympus.

The design of this Histiaea Tetrobol

The obverse of this coin depicts the elegant head of the nymph Histiaea facing right, with her hair delicately styled and graced with a wreath. The reverse shows the water nymph Histiaea seated on the stern of a Greek galley decorated with a wing, holding a naval standard, reflecting the island’s importance as a seaport. Inscribed is “IΣTIAI-EΩN”, meaning “Of Histiaea”.
