Why purchase this ancient bronze coin struck in honor of Severus Alexander, from the private collection of a Prince?
A career diplomat of the Ottoman Empire, Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha was appointed Prince of the autonomous Greek island of Samos by Sultan Abdul-Hamid II 1884, where he reigned until 1894. It is during this period of time that Pasha acquired the majority of his spectacular 630-coin collection, consisting of mostly ancient Greek and Roman issues. The hoard, passed down to descendants for more than a century, was recently dispersed, consigned to public auction by one of Pasha's great-grandsons. This 29 mm diameter AE29 bronze coin, a provincial issue of the Ionian Island of Samos during the reign of Severus Alexander, A.D. 222-235, is certified as part of Pasha's astounding collection.
Portrait of the Emperor
The obverse of the coin depicts Roman Emperor Severus Alexander, in a classic pose facing right, depicted in the traditional drape and wreath of laurel, surrounded by the Greek inscription describing his name and title.
A warrior is illustrated on the reverse, armed with a spear, advancing toward an approaching animal. This design is accompanied by the inscription "CAMI-ΩN," which translates in modern English to "Coin of the People of Samos."
