Why add this ancient bronze coin that once belonged to a Prince to your collection?
This stunning ancient bronze coin is a provincial issue, struck on the Ionian Island of Samos A.D. 253-268, during the reign of Gallienus, the 41st Emperor of the Roman Empire. Measuring 25 mm in diameter, the coin also pays tribute to Hera, a goddess of great importance to the Samian civilization. The coin was once part of the personal collection of Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha, a noted diplomat of the Ottoman Empire, who served as Prince of Samos from 1885-1894. The Prince's hoard containing approximately 630 coins of primarily Greek and Roman issue passed down through generations of descendants for more than one hundred years, until recently, when a great grandson of Pasha consigned the collection to public auction.
Beautiful Commemorative imagery
The obverse features the portrait of Roman Emperor Gallienus, portrayed facing left, bearded, draped in a traditional cloak, and adorned with a wreath of laurel. The image is accompanied by a Greek inscription stating the emperor's name and title.
The cult statue of Hera Samian is depicted on the reverse, standing facing forward, wearing a modius or crown of Isis, surrounded by the Greek inscription "CAMI ΩN."
