Why purchase this bronze Ionian coin from the private collection of Prince Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha for your collection?
An astounding collection of ancient coinage primarily of Roman and Greek issue was recently dispersed by public auction. These coins were once part of the personal hoard of a Prince more than a century ago. Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha began his long and distinguished career in public service to the Ottoman Empire in 1874 when he was appointed ambassador to Rome. In 1878, he led the delegation for the Ottomans in the Congress of Berlin, participating in the negotiations for the Treaty of Berlin. It was during his time in Berlin that Pasha met French diplomat and numismatist William-Henri Waddington, who sparked his interest in numismatic study and collection. When Pasha was appointed Prince of the Greek island of Samos (1885-1894), he acquired much of his impressive collection. This AE13, bronze, 13mm diameter coin, struck 1st Century A.D. on the Ionian Island of Samos is an example from the Prince's hoard.
Coinage of Samos
As a province of the Roman Empire, imagery of Samian coinage struck in the 1st Century A.D. traditionally honors the ruling emperor with his portrait on the obverse, with the illustration of a god, goddess, or sacred animal on the reverse.
