Teos was a city of ancient Greece located on an isthmus of Ionia on the Aegean Sea. The city was noted for its wine production and constructed a temple in honor of the god of wine Dionysus. Having a weight of 1.01 grams, this Silver Diobol of Teos, struck 375-294 BC, measures approximately 20 mm in diameter.

Stunning Design Details

Featured on the obverse is a beautifully detailed image of a Griffin. The mythological beast with the body, tail and back legs of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle was thought to be the king of all creatures, often associated with gold in ancient Greek and Roman mythology.

A Chelys is depicted on the reverse, an ancient musical instrument made from the shell of a turtle. Inscribed "THI," which means "of the Teans" and "ALYPION," the name of the magistrate responsible for minting and issuing coinage.
