Why Purchase this 1872 $10 South Carolina Note Graded Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ by PMG?
Back in the late 19th century, the State of South Carolina was attempting to reconstruct the blue ridge railroad, and were hoping to sell bonds to finance the venture. E.B. Wesley, who was a founder of the New York Times, loaned $300,000 to them in order to underwrite bonds. As collateral, the State gave him $1,000,000 in scrip. While this seems like a significant amount of money to us, it was worth much much more back then. A year later however, it was worth nothing. The State of South Carolina repealed the bill, making the notes worthless.
These notes were divided among his children, and most were kept in storage for over a century. After all this time, they have finally come into the hands of collectors and dealers. Much to our surprise, these notes are in extremely fine condition! We submitted these $10 notes to PMG to be graded, and they returned as Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality)! It is very rare to find a note in such good condition that was made so long ago - especially in such quantity! Because they are in such great condition, the designs printed on the notes are easily seen in sharp detail. In the center of the obverse of the note is an image of Sergeants Jasper and Newton rescuing American Prisoners from the British. On the lower left is an image of General Daniel Morgan, who served in the Revolutionary War. Both of these vignettes are very well detailed, and are beautiful to look at in such fine condition. All around these are intricate patterns and designs that they seem like they would be impossible to duplicate.
On the reverse of the note is a message stating:”Issued Under an Act to Relieve the State of South Carolina of All Liability for its Guaranty of the Bonds of the Blue Ridge Railroad Company by Providing for the Securing and Destruction of the Same, March 2, 1872.”
If you are interested in increasing your collection of paper currency, then now is your chance! It is not often that you will see notes of this age at such high quality, especially at these prices! You don’t want to miss this opportunity - purchase your copy today! Once you get a chance to examine the note yourself, you won’t be disappointed!
