Why purchase this 2 oz Silver Intaglio Mint Getz Washington Round?
Collectors who have an appreciation for American numismatic history are sure to love this Silver Getz Washington round. The round is modeled after a pre-US Mint sample coin struck by Peter Getz. Getz designed the coins under the direction of Robert Morrris, the Chairman of the Senate committee that was responsible for coinage. He made silver coins for Senators and copper versions for Congressmen and dignitaries. He struck them in the house of metallurgical expert John Harper, and his equipment was later moved to the new Philadelphia Mint. This round pays tribute to his 1792 prototype. It was struck on a 2 oz planchet of .999 fine silver at Intaglio Mint and remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Historic General George Washington Design by Peter Getz
Both faces of this round bear Getz's designs. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of President George Washington in his military uniform. Washington, of course, rose to prominence as a General in the Continental Army. He has a tern countenance. Rim inscriptions read, "G. WASHINGTON. PRESIDENT. I." and "1792."
An eagle guards a union shield on the reverse. In its talons are arrows, which symbolize America's willingness to defend herself and her values, and an olive branch, which denotes a desire for peace. Fifteen stars spread out above the eagle. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" spreads throughout most of the rim, while "TWO TROY OUNCES .999 FINE SILVER" is inscribed in small font at the bottom.
