Breathtaking Design Details
Obverse: The Roman goddess Minerva is depicted on the obverse, wearing a crested Corinthian style helmet. As the goddess of wisdom, commerce, inspiration and strategy, Minerva is an appropriate allegory for the technological triumph of the Panama Canal. "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears in the field above the goddess' head, with the honorary Roman numeral date "MCMXV" (1915) on a curved banner below. The image is encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWO TROY OUNCES."
Reverse: Minerva's steadfast owl companion is illustrated on the reverse, perched in the pinecone-laden branches of a Ponderosa Pine tree. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "999 FINE AG" are inscribed beside the owl, along with the ornamental Mint mark "S." The inscriptions "PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION" and "SAN FRANCISCO" surround the image.
