MCM Exclusive Big 5 Series Black Rhino

The Big 5 Coin Series

The Big Five coin series from Tanzania began in 2014 with the first issue – the Serengeti Lion. This beautiful coin was struck in high relief with a proof finish, making it stand out as a particularly attractive first release. The following year, the second issue in this beautiful coin series was released, this time commemorating the Elephant! This coin was also struck in proof high relief, and both coins were released as legal tender of Tanzania with the denomination of 1000 shillings. These fine releases have created a legacy for a splendid series, and 2016’s issue has lived up to this expectation. For the third year, this amazing Big Five coin series presents a stunning animal – a Black Rhinoceros – designed in high relief with a mirrored proof finish. Legal tender like the rest for the same 1000 shillings face value, this year’s coin is an absolute must for collectors!

Tanzania Black Rhino CoinCountry of Origin - Tanzania

Tanzania is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lakes region. It is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west; Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south; and the Indian Ocean to the east. Africa's tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro, is located in northeastern Tanzania. Europeans began colonizing Tanzania during the late 19th century when Germany formed German East Africa. This gave way to British rule following World War I. The mainland was governed as Tanganyika, with the Zanzibar Archipelago remaining a separate colonial jurisdiction. Following their respective independence in 1961 and 1963, the two countries merged in April 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania.

The Black Rhinoceros is a species of rhinoceros, native to eastern and southern Africa including Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Although the rhinoceros is referred to as black, its color varies from brown to grey. Black Rhinoceros follow the same trails that elephants use to get from foraging areas to water holes. They also use smaller trails when they are browsing. They are very fast and can get up to speeds of 34 mph running on their toes. The Rhinoceros as a species is quite rare due to severe hunting and poaching by humans and this has been a practice for some time. The ancient Chinese often hunted rhino horn for the making of wine cups as well as the rhinoceros skin to manufacture imperial crowns, belts and armor for soldiers. As a result, the species overall is classified as critically endangered, and one subspecies - the western black rhinoceros, were declared extinct by the IUCN in 2011.

Big 5 Series: Black Rhino Coin

For this 2016 year, ModernCoinMart chose to honor the Black Rhinoceros as the animal of choice for their Big Five coin series. The obverse design features a rhinoceros looking into the viewer with the amazing strength and beauty that these animals posses. The inscription “BLACK RHINOCEROS” is present at the top of this design. The Big Five coin series logo is located on the right side and the date “2016” is present at the bottom right. The reverse contains the coat of arms of United Republic of Tanzania at the center, the country of origin “TANZANIA” at the top and the denomination “1000 SHILLINGS” located at the bottom of this design. The choice of amount and purity of silver for each of these coins with the weight of 31.1g of .999 silver assures these as being intrinsically valuable as well. ModernCoinMart designed these spectacular coins and they have chosen to limit the mintage of these coins to 5,000 worldwide, and they have announced recently that the next two coins will feature a leopard in 2017 and a buffalo in 2018.

The Big Five coin series features outstanding minting quality and purity and are created using high relief design with the proof strike method as they are struck to such perfection that these coins actually have mirrored fields in the background. Additionally, these amazing coins are backed by the United Republic of Tanzania to be legal tender at its face value of 1000 Shillings. Today, these incredible low mintage coins are available for purchase from ModernCoinMart in a certified form from Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC) with the highest grade possible - Proof 70 Ultra Cameo.

Having these coins certified by NGC provides further guarantee of the coin's weight, purity, and overall quality, as well as adding an additional factor of collectibility to these unique coins. They are securely protected in an NGC plastic holder – the same technology that is used for the protection of some of the greatest coins in the world today. When NGC certifies any coin, by all the rules and regulations of coin certification - the authenticity and the grade of that coin are guaranteed. For the coins certified with Proof 70 Ultra Cameo grade, the Numismatic Guaranty Company guarantees that this coin has no post-production imperfections at five times the magnification, and this is a major factor for collectors everywhere.

Furthermore, on all NGC certified coins, a very special label that reflects the animal presented on the coin is included. This was true for the Serengeti Lion, the Serengeti Elephant and continues for the Black Rhinoceros. This coin series is extremely limited as the mintage for these coins has been set at only 5,000 coins worldwide. This results in a very small supply for the extremely large demand of numerous numismatists today. To add another level of collectibility to these coins, the populations for these coins at NGC Proof 70 is 1481 as of February 10th, 2016 - significantly smaller number than their original mintage figure. These factors clearly demonstrate the tremendous value that these coins have for the numismatic community and therefore while the opportunity to purchase these coins exists, it should not be missed.
