Two new buffalo announcements from the U.S. Government are certain to peak interest in the already popular Gold Buffalo. The buffalo itself has been named by the United States as its official mammal! On the numismatist side, bullion issue Gold Buffalo coins will no longer be sealed in Mint Plastic, but will come in in tubes of 20.
The American Buffalo, or Bison, is a large creature that lives in the plains of North America. It is a longstanding symbol of the American frontier, and its very distinctive profile can be picked out anywhere. Because of this, it has been used many times by the United States Government, such as on the Buffalo Nickel and the National Park Service logo.
Despite an abundance of buffalo in early america, these beautiful mammals were hunted to near-extinction around 1890. They have since begun to recover, and are now categorized as only “Near Threatened.” It is a well-loved creature of the U.S., and it is no wonder that it has made headlines!
On May 9, 2016 the National Bison Legacy Act was signed by President Barack Obama. This Act designates the Buffalo as the the national mammal of the U.S.! This was a great victory for the “Vote Bison” Coalition that has been pushing the bill for over 4 years.
John Calvelli, Executive Vice President for Public Affairs of the Wildlife Conservation Service, stated the following in a press release:
“The adoption of bison as our National Mammal represents a validation of the many meaningful ways this animal represents America. As an ecological keystone, cultural bedrock and economic driver, the bison conveys values such as unity, resilience and commitment to healthy landscapes and communities.”
The Buffalo will not take the Bald Eagle's place as the National Animal of the United States, but will stand as the National Mammal.
Buffaloes are active in numismatic news as well! On May 4, 2016 the U.S. Mint announced that their very popular bullion series of 24 Karat (.9999 fine) Gold Buffalo coins will no longer be issued inside sealed plastic, but will be encased inside 20-Coin tubes. These tubes will come in monster boxes of 25, which will be orange to be distinguished from other bullion coin boxes.
The 1 oz. Gold Buffalo bullion coin has been issued from the U.S. Mint since 2006, and has always been inside of 20-Coin sheets of sealed Mint plastic. For gold stackers, this has always made the coins harder to store as the sheets are fairly unwieldy. This switch to tubes will make the coins much easier to store, particularly with tubes of U.S. Mint American Silver Eagles and American Gold Eagles.
On the other hand, the fact that these coins were previously sealed in plastic made them less susceptible to damage. While coins in a tube are very well protected from any damage, the fact that they are stacked on top of each other could result in light scrapes and blemishes as the coins shift. It remains to be seen if this new packaging will affect the high grades normally achieved by the Gold Buffalo from grading companies such as the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).
This change in packaging is certain to bring increased interest in this U.S. Gold bullion series. Add to this the highly peaked interest of many Americans looking for some way to commemorate the year that the buffalo was made the National Mammal of the U.S., and 2016 promises to be a big year for Gold Buffalo!
