This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 1 oz. Proof American Buffalo which is a collector issue 24 karat gold bullion coin with a face value of $50 produced by the United States Mint since 2006. I discuss this impressive proof gold buffalo coin with a strong focus on the latest issue the 2016 $50 1 oz. Proof Gold Buffalo.

Indian Head and American Buffalo Designs of James Earle Fraser (1876-1953)

The American Buffalo 2016 one ounce gold proof coin features an adaption of a classic American coin design. This is the same stunning design that has been featured on the gold buffalo since its initial release in 2006 and is one of the main reasons for its huge popularity. The original designs can be seen on the Indian Head nickel (Buffalo nickel) – a circulating five-cent piece that was produced over a 25 year period (1913-1938).

This timeless design is the handiwork of famous American sculptor, James Earle Fraser (1876-1953). He was a student of legendary American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907). It was Fraser who sculpted the bronze sculpture of Saint-Gaudens that forms part of The Hall of Fame for Great Americans. This memorial - an outdoor sculpture gallery - can be visited in the Bronx, New York City. It is located on the grounds of the Bronx Community College.

The Design of the 2016-W Proof Gold Buffalo

The obverse of this 2016 gold bullion coin features the head of a native American Indian as seen from the side. His eyes are most likely wandering over the rolling plains of grass in the prairie… searching for American buffalo. This animal, a North American species of bison, was once deemed the life blood of the Native Plains Indians of North America. During that time, they used almost every inch of this 701+ lb (318+ kg) herbivore in order to survive in the American wilderness – a place filled with beauty, freedom, and stark dangers.

The Indian Head design comes in a matte or frosted finish against a back drop of mirrored fields. The contrast between the fields and devices on this proof gold coin are truly spectacular, especially on the back of a sharp strike.

Inscriptions on the obverse include the “W” Mint mark of the U.S. Mint facility at West Point, the year “2016,” the letter “F” in reference to James Earle Fraser (mentioned above) and the word “LIBERTY.”

The reverse of this collector issue 2016 buffalo gold coin features an American buffalo or bison. It is featured in a matte or frosted finish against a back drop of mirrored fields – similar to the finish that can be found on the obverse of this proof coin.

According to legend, although not proven, the buffalo featured is said to be modelled after Black Diamond. This popular North American bison – born in captivity in 1893 - was housed at Central Park Menagerie (Central Park Zoo).

Inscriptions on the reverse of the 2016 50 Dollar 1 oz. Gold Buffalo Proof include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (“Out of many, one”), “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.”

Why buy the 2016-W 1 oz. Proof Gold Buffalo?

This 2016 buffalo gold coin, with a strong resemblance to the Indian Head nickel (Buffalo nickel) design, could make a great gift or addition to any collection.

Here is why the discerning collector shouldn’t miss out on the latest issue:

24-Karat Gold from Newly Mined Sources in America

By mandate, these proof gold coins may only be produced by using gold from newly mined sources in America. This makes these coins American gold in the truest sense of the word – a great means to show one’s patriotism.

Did you know that 1 oz. Proof American Buffalo coins were the first 24-karat gold coins (.9999 fine gold) issued by the United States Mint? Is it any wonder that these 24-karat gold coins count among the finest and most popular gold coins, both in the United States and abroad?

10th Anniversary - American Buffalo Coin Program

The year 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of this 1 oz. proof gold buffalo coin. The first one, authorized by Congress in 2005, was produced in 2006 as part of the American Buffalo Coin Program.

Legal Tender

The 2016-W 1 oz. Proof Gold Buffalo is legal tender for $50. This is no reflection of the value of its 1 oz. 24-karat gold content. The true value of its face value lies in its legal tender status - its content, purity and weight are guaranteed by the federal government.

Indian Head and American Buffalo Designs

This 2016 proof gold buffalo coin with reeded edge features an adaption of James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head and American Buffalo designs. The original designs are featured on the famous Indian Head nickel (Buffalo nickel) - issued from 1913 to 1938.

These designs are timeless, works of art created by one of America’s greatest sculptors. The very same man and sculptor who was once a student of another great American sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens – creator of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle and Winged Liberty Design.
