The Winged Liberty Commemorative is an exclusive MCM product. Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original plasters for his famous Double Eagle designs were uncovered, and in his original artwork, Liberty was found to have additional features such as angel-like wings and a Native American headdress. These are elements that had been removed in the revised design present on the 1907 Double Eagle released for circulation. These plasters were completed by John Mercanti, and have been used to create dies to strike High Relief Silver and Gold Winged Liberty Commemoratives!
These commemoratives were created in partnership with the National Park Foundation, the official charitable partner of the National Park Service. You can purchase these High Relief Winged Liberty Saint-Gaudens Commemorative Proofs from MCM right now, with licensed National Park Foundation packaging, or you can read more about the U.S. Coins that Never Were.
In one of their most exciting releases, the U.S. Mint commemorated the 30th Anniversary of their world-renowned silver bullion coin series with a special feature - edge lettering! All Proof and Burnished American Silver Eagles issued in 2016 were struck with incuse text, reading: “30th ANNIVERSARY.” Although this additional feature did cause an unfortunate production delay, it was a massive one-year addition to the series and it proved to be tremendously popular.

The MCM exclusive First-Ever Football-shaped coins were a very special surprise for 2016. Created in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM), each of these stunning beauties boast a very realistic design and shape of an American football. This detail is extreme, from the thick stitching forming the spine of the ball, to the fine dimpled texture that covers the ball's surface. Struck in both 1 oz. .9999 fine silver and 1 oz. .9999 fine gold, these coins had extremely limited mintages of 8,500 for the silver and only 550 of the gold.

The Northern Sky coin series from the Royal Australian Mint drew to a close this year, with the final coin in the series commemorating the constellation Cygnus. This stunning coin shows the swan-shaped pattern of stars with vibrant green and dark blue background. This may be the final time we see the vast dome of the night sky spreading across the concave surface of a coin.
If you want to lock in your purchase for one of these final releases, you will need to act quickly. The vastly popular series sold out at the RAM almost immediately after its release. Only a small portion of its mintage is still available at MCM. In a remarkable addition to 2016’s array of new releases, some coins from a hoard of ancient Silk Road coins were uncovered! These silver Hemidrachms were minted in Tabaristan, an important stop along the 7,000-mile long ancient trade route. They were preserved remarkably well, and the ancient coin division of the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded them Mint State!
Another massive release from the U.S. Mint in 2016 was their series of Gold Centennial Commemorative Coins. Three American classics, the Mercury Dime, the Standing Liberty Quarter, and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2016. In honor of the achievement, the U.S. Mint struck each of the coins again in 2016, with .9999 fine (24-karat) gold!
These coins are all available for purchase at ModernCoinMart right now, in their original Mint packaging or graded by NGC or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Special labels and designations are available to choose between. Read more about 2016 Liberty Centennial Gold Coins.
Struck to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Purity law, this coin boasted more than just a popular theme. It was actually struck into the shape of a beer bottle cap, marking it a first in the numismatic world. Boasting a stunning prooflike finish, a colorful design, and of course, its impressive shape, it should come as no surprise that it is one of the most popular commemorative coins of 2016! It even comes with a coaster that, on second glance, will reveal itself to be a Certificate of Authenticity.
These Beer Cap coins are still available at MCM, but you will need to act quickly – only 2,500 were struck.
Captain America’s Shield became a numismatic item for the first time in 2016! Struck from 2 oz. of .999 fine silver, it sports a domed shape and a colorized reverse design that brings its appearance startlingly close to the real thing. It carries a limited mintage of only 7,500 which, along with its legal tender status, has made this coin very collectible. While we wouldn't recommend deflecting an attack with it, it is a fantastic display piece that could serve as a great conversation starter.
