Fall is here. For most, tailgating, football, hockey, color tours, pumpkins, Halloween, and perhaps surprisingly, coin collecting all come to mind as the air becomes crisp and the leaves give us their brilliant annual show. Here are some coins to consider as gifts or as seasonal additions to your collection to get you ready for this celebrated time of year!
One thing that comes to mind for many during this season is the great outdoors. The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has a great selection of coins that appreciate fall, all brought to fruition by Canadian artists and designers.
The Great Canadian Outdoors series features scenes from each season BUT, they can all be enjoyed in the crisp autumn air. These are colorized proofs struck in .9999 pure silver with about ¾ oz. silver weight per coin. The scenes depict hiking, canoeing, skiing (which you can do at the right altitude in the fall!) and enjoying an evening campfire.
The Mother Nature’s Magnification series is another innovative series featuring low mintage and stunning artistic achievement. Each coin in the series is struck on a 1 oz. .9999 fine silver planchet with a proof finish. There is a colorized reverse and a raised “dew drop” which magnifies an element of the design image. The two entries so far feature floral images, and a crab apple in lovely fall scenery.
One of the highlights of the autumn in the heartland of America is the brilliant changing color of the many varieties of Maple trees. The star of the season is the classic Sugar Maple with the famously five pointed leaf. This tree gives us spectacular beauty with vibrant yellows and deep reds as the weather turns. North America also has Silver Maples and Red Maples which bring to mind a coin minted last year to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation: the Canada Colorized Maple Leaf Proof. This 5 oz stunner features a stylized Maple leaf that encompasses smaller leaf motifs and imagery that celebrates Canada. These are colorized in red with a highly reflective silver proof background. This beautiful monster of a coin also features a brilliant Maple privy mark and a tiny mintage of 1,500 coins.
There are 10 native Canadian Maple trees. The Sugar Maple gives America’s neighbors to the North their national emblem which symbolizes Peace and Tolerance. Canadians and Numismatists celebrate the many different types of Maple Leaf on RCM coinage. If stacking is more your speed, the RCM issues some of the most popular bullion coins on the planet: the Canadian Maple series which started back in 1979 with the Gold Maple and then was expanded to include silver and platinum issues. The RCM has also stuck various commemorative coins with different Maple Leaf imagery, celebrating the star of the season.
The RCM started as part of the British Royal Mint system back on January 2, 1908. They strike all Canadian circulating coinage in addition to circulating coinage for other countries struck on a contract basis. The RCM is a world leader in the production of precious metals, bullion, and collector coins. Today they enjoy a history of innovation and a reputation for artistic brilliance.
The RCM has released another remarkable series, the Nocturnal by Nature series. The coins are unique matte proofs, struck in .9999 fine silver and plated with black rhodium, giving them a haunted and unique appearance. The coins feature: the Howling Wolf, the Cunning Cougar, the Barn Owl and The Little Brown Bat prowling the dark night…all of which bring to mind Halloween.
If your autumnal highlight is Halloween, then MCM is the place for you!
