Why add the Silver Drachm of Western Satraps from King Nahapana to your Indo-Greek collection?

Coinage of Western Kshatraps provides historians a detailed record of the power and wealth in the regions of central and western India from 1-5th centuries AD. Satraps coinage contained inscriptions on the reverse of both the current ruler and his predecessor. This genealogical record of the Kshatraps rulers can be used to date other kingdoms known to be connected to Western Satraps ruling families. This practice was begun by the powerful ruler Nahapana around 119 AD and continued for more than three hundred years.

Why are two kings inscribed on the reverse of this silver Drachm coin?

Greek imagery is prominent on the Indo-Greek inspired Silver Drachm of Western Satraps. The reverse depicts the thunderbolt and arrow of Zeus, and inscribed is Nahapana and father. The obverse features the profile of Nahapana right facing, wearing the Satraps crown with high collar. Inscribed is King Nahapana.

Graded and enclosed in a holder by NGC.

This 2,000 year old specimen is graded Very Fine, by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This Silver Drachm is equivalent to a Sheldon scale rating of 25. Lettering and major features are sharp, some definition of the smaller details, with even wear along the surface and high points of the coin.

A unique Indian coin inscribed with both current and previous rulers began a tradition in coin design that lasted for 350 years. Purchase from MCM today!
