Why add this Silver Drachm of Nahapana leader of the Western Satraps to your ancients' collection?

The Western Satraps were a kingdom ruling central and western India dating 35 - 409 AD. This dynastic kingdom lasted for 27 rulers. Sometimes called Western Kshatrapas or Kshaharatas, it's a word descended from Persian meaning governor/viceroy. Nahapana was one of the stronger rulers and with regional stability they became an important part of the Silk Road trade routes. With a massive influx of new wealth, Nahapana established the use of silver coinage based upon Greek examples for commerce.

The imagery of the coin is derived from Greek myth.

The obverse features the bust of Nahapana facing right, a high collar at his neck and wearing a typical satrap cap, Image is inscribed with Greek text. The reverse depicts the Greek symbols of an arrow and a thunderbolt, bordered by text in the Brahmi and the Kharosthi languges. In Greek mythology, the thunderbolt is the divine weapon of Zeus, God of the Sky; the arrow is symbolic swiftness, knowledge, and manifestation of power. Both powerful symbols for an emerging dynasty.
