This NGC Fine Greek City-State of Athens Silver Tetradrachm is part of the Athena Collection
Greek coinage and specifically the Silver Owl Tetradrachm have inspired coin designs for over 2,500 years. Referred to as the "Little Owl" by the ancient Greek Historian Philochorus, this widely circulated coin was one of the first to have imagery struck on both sides. These examples all date from circa 393-294 BC, and were widely circulated during the process of rebuilding Athens after their defeat in the Peloponnesian War with Sparta. These coins lean toward the Hellenistic style of Greek art.
Designs of Athena and the Owl
Each hand-struck Athenian Owl is uniquely beautiful. Hand engraved dies were used to manually strike each Tetradrachm. This minting technique produced unique surface and strike characteristics on each coin. Athena, the patroness of Athens adorns the obverse. The reverse includes inscription "AOE" meaning "of the Athenians" and front facing Little Owl.
