Why should you purchase this Choice Fine Owl Tetradrachm from the Athena Collection?
The original Athenian Owl Tetradrachm was introduced in the 5th century BC during the Golden Age of Athens partially to fund construction of the Parthenon. Athenian culture flourished until the Peloponnesian War in 431-404 BC when Sparta defeated the Athenians. The period that followed was a time of rehabilitation for Athens. Tetradrachm with the classic Athena and Owl combination were minted to support the rebuilding efforts. These examples date circa 393-294 BC, from that crucial time in Greek history.
What is depicted on the Athenian Owl Tetradrachm?
The Athenian Owl Tetradrachm all were individually struck using hand carved dies with Athena and the Owl, symbolic images of knowledge and wisdom. The obverse features the right facing profile of Athena. The reverse portrays front facing standing Owl; inscribed "AOE" which means "of the Athenians." This coin was one of the first coins to have a head and "tails" design.
