Why should this beautifully minted First Releases 2023 Gold Britannia King 1/2 oz. bullion coin be the next addition to your collection?

The Royal Mint introduced the Gold Britannia series in 1987. Since 1672, the image of Britannia has been re-interpreted many times, and has appeared on the coinage of every monarch since the reign of King Charles II. This 2023 dated release of the series marks a new chapter for Britannia coinage, featuring the introduction of the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The reverse design remains unaltered, struck with the Coin of the Year (COTY) Award winning image of Britannia originally created in 1987 by acclaimed British sculptor Philip Nathan.

  • This 2023 Britannia coin is struck from 1/2 Troy oz. of .9999 fine gold.
  • The fifty pound legal tender coin of Great Britain measures 27.00 mm in diameter.
  • The coin received the collectible First Releases attribution.
  • Four specially designed, anti-counterfeit security features are cleverly integrated into the coin's reverse design.
  • The coin represents the first release of the iconic Britannia series to be graced with a portrait of His Majesty the King.

Gorgeous Portrayal of Britannia

Obverse: The obverse features the first definitive coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. The left facing effigy of Great Britain's new monarch was created by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings. A guilloche patterned field surrounds the monarch, along with the inscriptions "CHARLES III," "D.G. REX. F.D." and "50 POUNDS."

Reverse: Britannia is portrayed as an elegant female warrior standing in a defensive pose on the reverse, with a trident, an olive branch and a patriotic shield in her grasp. Inscribed "BRITANNIA," "2023," "1/2 OZ" and "999.9 FINE GOLD." Security features include: a background composed of a surface animation that emulates the movement of waves, a delicately lined texture defining the Union Jack graphic upon Britannia's shield, a circular inset with imagery that changes from a padlock to a trident with movement of the coin, and a thin band surrounding Britannia containing the repeating Latin phrase "DECUS ET TUTAMEN," which translates as "an ornament and a safeguard."
