$20 Gold Double Eagles

When it comes to pre-1933 U.S. gold, one of the most popular denominations is the $20 gold piece. Classic $20 gold coins also include one of the most famous designs of any U.S. coin, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.

The first $20 gold coin was struck in 1849, although the coins intended for circulation began production in 1850. The first $20 gold pieces displayed a Liberty Head design. There are several key dates displaying this design worth many thousands of dollars, but there are also a variety of issues available that are rather common and can be added to your collection quite affordably.

In 1907, the Liberty Head $20 gold piece was still being produced, but so was its replacement, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. The Saint-Gaudens $20 gold coin was the last $20 gold coin struck by the U.S. Mint for circulation. The Mint stopped striking these coins after 1933 and very few from 1933 are known to exist. The Saint-Gaudens design is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful designs ever displayed on a U.S. coin. This is the main reason all collectors should have at least 1 of these coins in their collection.
