The United States Mint honors the First Spouses of American Presidents by issuing 1/2 Oz. $10 gold coins featuring their images, in the order they served as First Spouse. The United States Mint issues First Spouse Gold Coins in conjunction with the Presidential Golden Dollars as the First Spouse Gold Coins program is authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005.
The First Spouse Gold Coin obverses (heads sides) feature portraits of the first spouses and inscriptions of their names, the order and years of their term as first spouse, the year of minting, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "LIBERTY." Each coin has a unique reverse (tails) design featuring an image emblematic of the respective spouse's life and work, as well as the inscriptions "UNITED STATES of AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "$10," 1/2 OZ.," and ".9999 FINE GOLD."
When a president served without a first spouse, a gold coin is issued bearing an obverse image emblematic of Liberty as depicted on a circulating coin of that era, and a reverse image emblematic of a theme of the respective president's life.
All the First Spouse Coins are struck at the West Point Mint and display a prominent "W" mintmark. The coins are struck in both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated Condition, and are also available professionally graded as First Spouse Gold Coins (PCGS) and First Spouse Gold Coins (NGC) at ModernCoinMart.
First Spouse coins make an excellent addition to any coin collection. With significant pure 24-karat gold content, they can add substantial value to a collection containing both the Presidential Golden Dollars and the $10 First Spouse .9999 half-ounce gold coins.

While presidents cannot be placed on a coin until their death, First Spouses must be put on a coin in the same year as the respective President, thus First Spouses may be placed on coins while still living. Should a President have had more than one spouse while in office, such as John Tyler, each spouse's coin will be released, resulting in five or more commemoratives that year. In addition to the gold coins, bronze medals will be produced for each First Spouse by the U.S. Mint.
The United States Mint released the 2020-W Gold First Spouse Coin in August 2020 to honor the life and legacy of the 41st First Lady, Barbara Bush. The program's extension was made possible by Public Law 116-112, which was signed by President Trump on January 27, 2020.
The obverse features a dignified portrait of Barbara Bush with inscriptions indicating the years she served as First Spouse. The reverse showcases a person diligently reading, representing the First Lady's passion for making literacy and knowledge accessible to every American. As is tradition, a Presidential Dollar featuring her husband and former 41st President George H.W Bush will be released later in 2020.
