The release of the Wedge-Tailed eagle was major news in the numismatic world. The design was created by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief engraver of the U.S. Mint in 2014. This is the first time in history that a previous Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint has designed a coin for another world Mint!
The fact that John Mercanti is known for creating another very popular eagle design on a coin – the reverse of the American Silver Eagle - makes these eagle designs even more popular. His initial design, which displayed an Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle swooping down with its talons extended, was used on the 2014 and 2015 issue. The 2016 version has a new design showing the Wedge-Tailed Eagle perched, with wings folded to its sides.
