Why add this 1980 Grant Wood American Arts series 1 oz. gold medallion to your collection of precious metals?

The American Arts Commemorative Gold Medallion series was issued by the U.S. Mint for only five years, beginning in 1980. A total of ten gold bullion medals were released, in a 1 oz. and a 1/2 oz. weight each year, commemorating American artists in a diverse array of artistic fields such as music, architecture, fine art and literature. Overall, the series was not very popular, but it did force the Mint to re-evaluate such details as the importance of indicating the issuing authority and metallic content on their products, leading to the development of one of the most successful world bullion programs: the American Eagle. This medallion, struck from 1 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold in the inaugural year of the series, honors painter Grant Wood, whose work most often reflected images focused on the rural American Midwest. The medal was minted at the West Point Bullion Depository prior to becoming an official U.S. Mint branch in 1988.

Commemorative Design by Frank Gasparro

The obverse features a portrait of Grant Wood with his name inscribed above. Wood's famed "American Gothic" painting is depicted on the reverse. Inscribed "AMERICAN ARTS COMMEMORTIVE SERIES" and "1980."
