Why purchase this ancient Greek bronze coin from the hoard of the Prince of Samos?

Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha pursued a long career in the public service of the Ottoman Empire, beginning with his appointment as ambassador to Rome in 1874. He held varied positions in the next decades, including Governor-General of Crete, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ottoman Empire (the only Greek to ever occupy this position), and finally, Prince of the autonomous Greek island of Samos (1885-1894). It was during his term as Prince that his enthusiasm for numismatic study led him to collect about 630 ancient coins, of mainly Greek and Roman origin.

Struck late 3rd Century B.C., in the town of Gortyna, on the Mediterranean Island of Crete, this AE12 (bronze, 12 mm coin) was once among Pasha's treasured collection. The coin was struck during the Hellenistic era, the most prosperous period in the history of Gortyna, when it held hegemony as the most powerful city on the island.

Gortyna coinage imagery

The obverse depicts the laureate head of Apollo facing right, surrounded by a beaded border. A sacred Cretan animal, a bull, is illustrated standing on the reverse, with Greek inscription above.
