Why purchase this Silver Drachm struck on the Carian Island of Rhodes?

This stunning Silver Drachm, struck late 3rd-early 2nd Centuries B.C. in ancient Rhodes has been authenticated as one of the nearly 630 coin hoard of the late Alexandre Caratheodory Pasha (1833-1906). Pasha was a noted diplomat of the Ottoman Empire who took an interest in the study of ancient coins in 1878, while serving the Ottomans as a commissioner in Berlin. His impressive collection of mostly Greek and Roman issued coins was passed to his descendants for more than a century, and recently dispersed at public auction by one of Pasha's great-grandsons.

Imagery honoring Rhodes

The obverse features the forward facing image of the Helios, the personification of the Sun in Greek mythology. The Colossus of Rhodes, the sixth of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was a huge statue of Helios measuring 32 meters (100 feet) high, built at Rhodes in 280 B.C.

The reverse depicts the side view of a three-petaled rose, with the name of the magistrate curving above. The rose, Rhodon, in Greek, is the inspiration for the name of the islands, and the symbol for Rhodes.
