He was also reputed to be a man of exceptional character. A loyal Greek, he was honored by Athenians with citizenship. Struck from silver, this AR Drachma provides a unique connection with this ancient leader and the area that he led.

Historic Ariarathes V Design

The obverse features a right--side portrait of Ariarathes V. He is depicted with long hair, and his head fills this face.

Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare, stands on the reverse with a military helmet on her head. She holds a long javelin in her left hand and a Nike with her right while leaning on a shield, which is placed on the ground. Inscriptions in Greek are included to the left and right, as well as below the image.
