Why order this Sicily c.275-215 BC Hieron II AE Unit?

Hiero II served as Tyrant of Syracuse from 270-215 BC. He was an illegitimate son of Hierocles, a Syracusan noble. From 263-215 BC, he was an important ally for Rome in the Punic war, providing them with both men and supplies. Students of politics may recognize his name from Nicollo Machiavelli's The Prince, in which he is described as a rare example of someone who rose from private station to prince hood and as an exceptionally virtuous leader. Such students would be particularly interested in this AE Unit, which dates back to high reign in the third century BC.

Stunning Hieron II Design

The coin's obverse features a unique look at the god Poseidon. He is depicted as a young man with curly hair, and his effigy takes up almost the entire face of the coin.

On the reverse, there is a Greek inscription below a trident that is framed on each side by two leaping dolphins.

Well Preserved VF

This coin earned Very Fine certification from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) more than 2,200 years after it was struck. Coins in VF condition have nearly complete details.
